Southern England Calf Show 2008

SOUTHERN ENGLAND CALF SHOW.

Bull Calf born on or after 1st March 2008.

Kingsbrompton Win Championship.

55 calves were entered from across the South of England for the 2nd Southern England Calf show. The standard was high with many exhibits going onto the Society's 'Black Velvet' Calf show at Smithfield next month. Judge for the day was Tony Miller, now Head Stockman for Shadwell Aberdeen Angus in Suffolk, having had a long career in Angus with notable herds.

Mr Miller choose as his Overall Champion a very eyecatching January born heifer, from Colin & Joan Hutchings of Dulverton. Making her showing debut, Kingsbrompton Etheria H657 is sired by the prolific show winning bull Logie Daredevil D255 and out of a Whitehall cow.

After their success at the last calf show in 2006, Edward & Claire Jones of Cullompton had to settle for Reserve Overall Champion with their young bull, Rull Erebus H087. This March born bull was sired by Moncur Freddie C030 and out of a Netherton cow. Erebus had earlier beaten off stiff opposition to win the Male Champion award.

Alan & Rob Bishop from Wokingham had a successful show picking up 3 first prize rosettes, starting with the first class of the day, which they won with a November born son of Nightingale Dalmigaivie Y195, Warrenho Jester Eric G238. Then came Warrenho Cherry Blossom H250, who won the strong February born Heifer Class. This one was sired by Lockerley Eastern Cruz and out of a Gaston Wood dam. But best of their day was the Reserve Female Champion which went to the red ticket winner of the baby heifer class. Born in March, Warrenho Ember H253 is sired by a home bred bull, Warrenho Just Eric E165, and out of a home bred cow and shown by Rob's wife Rachel which obviously made all the difference!

Reserve Male Champion was awarded to Paul Frain & Lisa Davey of Launceston. Muirhall Last Deal H039 was born in January and is out of the Highland Show prize winning heifer, Muirhall Ladybird D001. Last Deal had already had success in 2008 winning the calf class at Newbury.

Making the long trip from Northants a little more worthwhile was a win for Alex McLaren in the first heifer class of the day. Aynho Estonia G448 was November born and out of the successful Estonia line at Aynho and sired by the home bred bull, Aynho Rossiter Eric B125 which was sold to Wedderlie and Idvies.

Another making a long journey was Terry Wolfe and Family, from Stevenage. Their journey was successful winning the heifer class for exhibitors having never won a first prize. The heifer, Aston Brooke Virginia H121 was February born and sired by Lockerley Easy Tiger E356.
The Novice Handler class for exhibitors under 30 was won by new Member Emma Smith from Bideford. It was great to see all youngsters doing a brilliant job.
