Southern England Calf Show 2009.

7th November 2009.
Bristol Sales Centre.

Judging the Bull Calf born on or between 1st January & 28th February 2009

Oakchurch Sweep the Board.

It was a good day for the West Mercia Club at the Southern England Calf; with two of their Members taking home most of the big awards. It was record entries this year with 74 calves entered from across the South of England and the Midlands and the standard was exceptionally high. There were a good number of spectators in attendance including the Society’s President, William McLaren who had only flown back from Ireland the day before. Judge for the day was Adrian Johnson from Brandsby near York, he commented that he was really impressed with the standard of stock at the show and was very honoured to be asked to judge it.

Mr Johnson tapped forward Oakchurch Destiny J110 as his Overall Champion. This January born heifer from first time exhibitors to the show and West Mercia Club Chairman Jeremy Price, had earlier won the second split of the January/February born heifer class and had stood Female Champion. This very stylish heifer is sired by Rawburn Rommel E423, senior stock bull at Idvies and out of the Royal Added Value 19D sired Ballyheather Dolly Z682.

The Reserve Overall Champion was another from the female classes and another first time exhibitor to the show. Melview Georgie J017 from Paul & Kirsty Westaway from Gloucestershire won the first split of the January/February born heifer class. Another classy heifer, brought out by Piers Robertson Morris, was sired by Nightingale Kruncher and out of the Westaway’s show cow, Tegnose Geraldine.

The Male Champion went to Oakchurch Diplomat J118, making it a very successfull day for the Price Family from Hereford. The February born bull had beaten off strong competition with 13 entries in the Jan/Feb 09 bull class.Sired by Oakchurch Dominator G035, he is out of the 2007 Royal Show Female Champion, Oakchurch Red Delia F021.

The only exhibitor to stop the West Mercia Exhibitors from gaining all the Championships was Calf Show regulars, Lockerley Hall Farms from Southampton. Their March-born bull calf, Lockerley Klassic J044 was fresh from gaining a second at the National Calf Show in Carlisle the week before. This sweet baby bull was sired by Lockerley Kid Poker G753 and out of the famous Kind Princess line at Lockerley.

Last year’s Champion Exhibitors had to settle this year with a first prize. Colin & Joan Hutchings of Dulverton, Somerset won the first class of the day, the September to December born bull class. The well grown Plasllewellyn Ken H006 is sired by the Danish Bull Fruelunds Atlas and out of Wedderlie Kensue A239.

Another making a long journey a little more worthwhile with a red rosette was Alex & Alastair McLaren from Northants. They won the first female class of the day for heifers born on or between 1st Sept & 31st Dec with Mollington Jante Erica H413. The October born heifer was sired by Wedderlie Ebrantic C522 and out of the Nightingale Dalmigavie Y195 sired dam, Mollington Jantie Erica C134.

Another first time visitor to the show picked up a red ticket in the March born heifer class. Judy Gardner’s Eckington Duchess J061 was brought out by stockman Matt Stoker with a little assistance from ashowing legend, Ian Anderson. Duchess was sired by the Nightingale stock bull: Auldhouseburn Karlos D218 and out of Nightingale Duchess Lancer Z003.

The steer classes were brought back for this year, winning the older class was Will & Terry Ives from Buckingham with Dumble, sired by Gaston Wood Emulate. The junior steer class added another rosette to Jeremy Price’s haul. This very shapely steer Oakchurch Electric, was sired by Oakchurch Dictator F031and has just been sold to a very well known prime stock shower for future use!

The Junior Handler Class was very ably won by Jess Denning from Bridgwater, fresh from winning the Youth Development Scholarship at Carlisle.

Best turned out calf went to Woodston Manor Partnership. This heifer definitely needs amention, second in her class, Callum Hillhouse had clipped her to perfection and she really did look superb.
