Females Dominate At Southern England Calf Show.
The bar continues to be raised with the tremendous quality of calves forward at the Southern England Calf Show. 65 animals were entered from across the South of England and there was a noticeable increase of spring born calves this year. The task of judge for the day fell to the Society’s President, Albert De Cogan from Co Cork, Republic of Ireland who praised the standard of the calves especially in the female line up and said he had thoroughly enjoyed the task.
Supreme Champion came from the January born heifer class, this was Rull Evita L127 from Claire and Ed Jones and Dan & Katherine Russell from Cullompton in Devon. The judge said that his Champion was a well balanced heifer that was superbly turned out. Brought out by freelance stockman Andrew Hughes, Evita is another shining star from the Jones’ stock bull Muirhall Top Deal E006 who has sired many of the Ed & Claire’s show and sale Champions over the last few year. Out of a home bred cow, Rull Evita E041, Evita L127 is a full sister to Evita K112 that had Inter Breed success at Honiton Show this year.
Following the Champion all the way through from the same January born heifer class to gain Reserve Supreme and Reserve female was Temple Emmey Lotsololly L501 from the Denning Family of Bridgwater, Somerset. Mr de Cogan thought this heifer would make a fabulous cow in the future. Emmey Lotsololly who must be in the running for the longest name in the catalogue, is sired by Lockerely Legolas, stock bull at Idvies and Rawburn and out of a home bred cow. Jess Denning, 2009 YDP winner was at the halter of this one but a big family effort to turn out the cattle is always the case with the Dennings. They also managed another red ticket in the first split of the baby heifer class with Temple Rosie Leigh L507 who is out of the prize winning cow Rawburn Rosebud H860 and sired by Rawburn El Torro.
Male Champion also went to the Jones & Russell team. Rull Everest L131 is March born and by home bred bull Rull Paymaster J095 and from the same Evita line as the Champion with Muirhall Top Deal E006 on both sides of his pedigree.
Reserve Male Champion followed Rull Everest from the Born after 1st March class and this one was Lockerley Percy L248 from Lockerley Hall Farm, Hampshire. Percy is the favourite of Abbey Batch, daughter of Herd Manager David and Abbey went on to win the 15-21 year old Junior Handler class with the bull. Percy is sired by a home bred bull, Lockerley Lancelot J074 and out of a home bred Kind Princess line which dates back to the Burningfold Herd.
Gaining the first red ticket of the day was father & son team Graham & Ashlea Kirk from Dorset. Their bull, Hinton Predator L001won the January/February born bull class and is sired by Beeston Predator H114 and out of Lynher Valley Phantasia D025.
The first female class of the day for heifers born on or between 1st Sept and 31st Dec 2010 was won by the September born Inkpen Ella K100 from Mr & Mrs Kary from Berkshire, Brought out by Keith Jempson, Ella is by the Inkpen stock bull Idvies Kojack H352. Mr & Mrs Kary also won the February heifer class with another Kojack daughter, Inkpen Black Fusia L118.
Last year’s winner Judy Gardner picked up a first prize in the second split of the baby heifer class which made the journey worthwhile from Worcestershire. Brought out by famous stock man Ian Anderson, Eckington Estinina L199 was born at the end of March and has Rawburn breeding on both sides being sired by Rawburn Elysium F547 and out of Rawburn Estinina B153.
Best turned out calf on the day, judged by Mary Smallwood went to Jake Sayer, a young man with great enthusiasm for cattle and showing.
